Safety measures will be brought in on a "hazardous" road near a Shropshire village primary school before Christmas, it has been revealed.

Councillor Claire Wild, Shropshire Council's cabinet member for highways, said a vehicle activated sign would be put up in St Martins Road, Gobowen, in a bid to slow traffic.

She said a decision was due to be made on Friday on whether a new pedestrian crossing would be installed in spring after a bid was submitted by local road safety campaigners.

Councillor Wild made the pledge after meeting campaigners and families at the site last week. She described the area, where many of the school's pupils have to get over the road to get to classes, as a "particularly dangerous place to cross".

People living in the area have been campaigning for a year to get a new pedestrian crossing in St Martins Road and more than 750 people have signed a petition calling for Shropshire Council to take action.

Earlier this month 11-year-old Oliver Lloyd suffered serious injuries in a collision with a car at the spot where the campaigners say the crossing should be installed.

Councillor Wild said: "The majority of children have to cross the road to get to school and there are 120 of them."

Gobowen Parish Council, described the road as "hazardous" while campaigner Dot Basham, who lives in the village, described the talks as "positive".
