The landlady of a Shropshire pub whose husband died just nine months after they married, has organised a masked charity ball in memory of him and to raise awareness of the condition that killed him.

Simon Carloss, who ran the Kangaroo Inn in Aston on Clun with his wife Michelle, collapsed while playing badminton with friends at Craven Arms Leisure Centre in January.

Mr and Mrs Carloss had recently returned from a belated honeymoon after their wedding in April last year.

The Masquerade Charity Ball at Walcott Hall, Lydbury North on November 30, is in aid of the charity Cry (Cardiac Risk in the Young).

There are just 30 out of 120 tickets left at £30 a head. The evening includes a Champagne reception, buffet meal, a prize auction, music by a live band, dancing and a prize for the best mask. Transport on the night will be via Caradoc Coaches from The Kangaroo Inn and Bishop's Castle to and from Walcot Hall at £5 per person.

Michelle Carloss said: "Initially I did the invitations from our wedding list, a list of family and friends. These are the last of the tickets. Anyone can come. It will be a buffet-style meal because of the amount of people.

"We've got a band and Simon's best men are doing a musical moment as well. The band is the one that played at our engagement party.

"The main reason for doing this is to raise awareness, really. Simon died so suddenly but I am not alone. There's too many people in my position, so it would be nice to let somebody else not have to go through what I'm going through."

In information to ticket holders, Michelle explains about the charity Cry (www.c-r-y.co.uk): "Our event's main mission is to create awareness of Cardiac Risk in the Young. I remember talking to a friend. He said he had the same condition as Simon, only he was diagnosed because he had applied for his pilot's licence. If only Simon liked to fly . . .

"There are various ways to detect cardiac conditions through screenings and various tests. Even if you are unable to attend our event, please read through the information on Cry's website and pass it on. It might save someone's life and someone else's heartache."
