Bill's bull outgrows Shrewsbury gallery
A life-size bull, made from wicker and metal, has proved to be a slight headache for the sculptor who made it for his end of year show.
Bill Sample, a second year foundation degree student, spent hours making a rampaging bull which was set to be exhibited at The Hive Gallery, in Belmont, Shrewsbury.
But the 60-year-old former clinical psychologist found it was too big to exhibit in the gallery and instead it is now housed in the entrance hall of Shrewsbury College of Arts and Technology where Bill is studying.
His bull is based on the Bagbury Bull and the tale that surrounds the village of Hyssington, in Powys.
Mr Sample said: "The legend of the Bagbury Bull concerns the wicked squire of Bagbury who, when he died, continued to torment the people of Hyssington. His ghost took the form of a rampaging bull which was eventually subdued by 12 Bible-reading clergymen.
"As the ghost weakened it shrank in size so that it could eventually be placed in a snuff box, which was buried under the doorstep of Hyssington church, where it remains to this day."
