Girls go football crazy at England game in Telford
European football arrived in Telford today - and that meant a fun afternoon off school for thousands of schoolchildren.
England's under-17 women's side was kicking off the tournament against Italy at Bucks Head this afternoon.
And that provided the opportunity for girls from across Telford & Wrekin to be introduced to the game.
The ground hosted games and fun activities before the match to promote the sport to girls aged between five and 16.
Around 50 schools brought pupils to watch the game and 10 primary schools took part in a football tournament.
Birmingham City ladies players Cristina Torkildsen and Katie Wilkinson were on hand to talk to aspiring players.
Miss Torkildsen said: "It's really important to get more girls into the game and give them the chance to meet females who are making a career out the game. Today shows how far women's football has come in the last 20 years."
Miss Wilkinson added: "Today's activities are to develop the game and I hope it encourages the girls here to get involved."
Supporters were greeted by Women's Super League mascot Berry the Bear, AFC Telford's Bobby Buck and England Lions and as well as football activities, girls could have their hair braided and faces painted ahead of the match, which kicked off at 12.30.
Eve Bailey, Football Development Office for Shropshire said: "Today is all about promoting opportunities for girls and engaging in football in schools, making girls aware it is a sport they can join in. Having the championships on our doorstep is a great way of promoting this."
The international fixture is the first of four to be held in Shropshire. Austria meet Portugal at Bucks head tonight at 7pm and this Friday the stadium will host Germany versus France. On December 2, Italy will be back to Bucks Head to take on Austria.
