Eager shoppers camped out from 6.30pm last night to grab a bargain at the new Aldi store which opened in Madeley this morning.

The biggest draw to the new store was a 23in television which was sold at half price for £60.

Newport town councillor Rodney Pitt attended the opening of the store in Madeley Court Road. He said: "The store was absolutely jam-packed and people were stacking their trolleys high.

"People started camping out at 6.30pm last night and one family brought their eight-year-old child and slept in sleeping bags in their car.

"Their 23in television was selling really well and even though it was one to a trolley, some people were trying to buy two and the staff dealt with it very well."

The store opened at 8am this morning and the first 100 people through the door were given a golden ticket, allowing them to claim prizes such as MP3 players and Aldi goody bags.

Tina Ellis, from Madeley, scooped the biggest golden ticket prize, walking away with a 40in HD-ready television.

Aldi store manager Tom Cooke said he and his team enjoyed welcoming the queueing customers into the new store.

He said: "There was a fantastic atmosphere at the store this morning and it was great to see so many people from the local community support the opening and turn out for a chance to win in our 'Golden Ticket' opening event.

"The team and I were pleased to introduce shoppers to the new store and look forward to welcoming them as regulars."
