Hourly trains plan from Shropshire to Wales clears major hurdle
Campaigners are today celebrating after plans for an hourly train service from Shropshire to Wales took a major step forward.
The Welsh Assembly last night confirmed it wants to bring in an hourly service between Shrewsbury and Aberystwyth, – described as a "massive" boost to the Mid Wales economy and tourism by councillors.
Edwina Hart, Welsh Assembly transport and economy minister, wants to bring the service in as soon as possible and will set up a group to draw up timetables and costings.
A final announcement is due in February.
The news was revealed in public for the first time by Robert Robinson, Welshpool Town Council clerk and secretary of the Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth Rail Liaison Committee, at a meeting of Welshpool Town Council last night.
Mr Robinson said: "At 6pm today I spoke to Edwina Hart and she has confirmed an implementation group will now be set up.
"This is not yet final confirmation of the service, but we have cleared a massive hurdle."
Councillor Steve Kaye, leader of the Welshpool Business Forum, said: "This is absolutely incredible news for business and, I dare say, tourism in Mid Wales.
"The current system is nothing short of a disgrace and I pay tribute to Mr Robinson for all his hard work in carrying out the survey and pushing the Welsh Assembly."
