Road safety measures are likely to be installed near a school in a matter of days, campaigners have been told.

The Vehicle Activated Signs, which warn drivers to slow down, will be introduced on St Martins Road in Gobowen, near Oswestry, before Christmas.

And a meeting of Selattyn and Gobowen Parish Council was also told work was continuing on proposals to have a pedestrian crossing put on the road.

Campaigners have been battling for more than a year for the crossing on the road near Gobowen Primary School.

Last month 11-year-old Oliver Lloyd suffered serious injuries after being in collision with a car at the spot where the campaigners say the crossing should be built.

Councillor Claire Wild, Shropshire Council's cabinet member for highways, attended a site meeting on the road to see the problem for herself and to meet campaigners.

Several of the campaigners attended the latest meeting of the parish council on Wednesday for an update on progress.

Shropshire Councillor David Lloyd said progress was being made on the crossing as well as the introduction of the Vehicle Activated Signs. He said: "The crossing has passed the first hurdle in that it has been assessed for engineering and for need.

"The application now goes into the budget process and we hope to have an announcement before too long.

"I am confident we will get a crossing but everything has to go through the council process.

"Meanwhile the highways department has been following up the visit by Claire Wild to Gobowen and are making every effort to bring VAS to the road, hopefully before Christmas.

"One sign will be installed at the junction of Perry Road and another will be up near the library. These signs will have the effect of slowing traffic down.

"I was pleased to see the campaigners at the parish council meeting. This demonstrates the concern of the public about traffic on the road."

Gobowen grandmother Dot Basham was one of the campaigners who attended the parish council meeting.

She said: "The parish council is supporting us and doing what it can to bring the crossing. The crossing is what we really want because the road is dangerous.

"Hopefully we will hear soon whether we are getting it. The warning signs are a good idea. Anything that slows traffic will help."
