When RSPCA officer Elaine Williams rescued two seriously wounded Canada geese, she was unsure whether they would pull through.

But, almost a month after they were found with shocking injuries caused by a crossbow, Mrs Williams helped release the birds back into the wild.

The pair were found on The Mere, Ellesmere, in October. One had a crossbow bolt through its neck, while the other had one in its wing. They were treated at an RSPCA centre in Cheshire.

Mrs Williams battled with the birds to save their lives, even suffering a broken nose in the process, but said they swam away yesterday as if nothing had happened.

She said: "The release was absolutely fine. They just swam off as if it was normal.

"There were straight back into their home. It went really well."
