The blue Volkswagen Golf careered into the barn on the A464 near Shifnal, sparking fears the building could collapse and prompting police to close the road.

The road remained closed today while emergency repairs were being carried out and motorists were being urged to avoid the area. The car remained embedded in the wall today.

The collision between the Golf and a Volvo at the Upton crossroads happened shortly before 2.30pm yesterday. The Golf then left the road and crashed into the barn, also knocking down a roadside mirror.

People in the two cars suffered minor injuries and two people were taken to hospital for treatment.

Richard Ewels, spokesman for West Mercia Police, said: "The Golf ended up striking a brick barn causing major structural damage to it.

"Initially there were reports of three casualties, two from the Golf and one from the Volvo.

"They were thought to be minor injuries but the two casualties from the Golf were taken to the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford suffering from shock and whiplash.

"The barn was considered to be unsafe therefore the road at the crossroads was closed by highways officials to pedestrians and traffic.

"The barn is being assessed by structural engineers today because there are fears it could collapse at anytime. It may have to be demolished."
