Drivers ignoring road closure warnings after Shifnal crash
Drivers are putting their lives at risk by ignoring road closure signs on the A464 near Shifnal, police warned today.
The road was closed at Upton crossroads last week following an accident that left a brick barn being seriously damaged and in a dangerous condition.
There were fears the building could collapse into the main road and the area was closed off to pedestrians and traffic as a safety precaution.
But Police Constable Mike Jenkins, the officer overseeing the incident, said some motorists are still using the road.
He said: "Despite the road being closed off with various closure and diversion signs in place, some motorists are ignoring the signs and moving the barriers to drive through.
"As they do so, they drive right past the gable end of the damaged barn risking their own lives and potentially those of rescue services should it collapse".
On Thursday a blue Volkswagen Golf crashed through the wall of a disused barn on the A464 following a collision with another vehicle.
The incident sparked fears the building could collapse, prompting police to close the road.
It is hoped contractors will begin work before Christmas to make the building safe but Mr Jenkins said it could be several days before the road could be reopened.
He said: "I urge motorists to act responsibly and to follow the diversions. It is an offence to move the signs and barriers and in doing so, they are putting themselves and others at risk."
