Abandoned at Christmas - Woody hoping for a new home

The festive season usually brings heart-warming examples of compassion and kindness. But for this beautiful dog it has not been a season of goodwill – as he was abandoned on a Shropshire road just before Christmas.

Rescued from the freezing temperatures, the dog, Woody, is being looked after at Primchurch Boarding and Resting Kennels, in Prees, near Whitchurch.

But sadly Woody isn't the only dog hoping to start 2014 with a new home after five more dogs arrived on Thursday.

Kennel owner Jacqui Downes said: "One has been reclaimed but we have heard nothing from the owners of the other four.

"We have had some really bad weather and with the strong winds a lot of fences have come down so we're hoping the dogs have escaped and people haven't realised yet with it being such a busy time of year.

"We actually had a really quiet Christmas but to then get five dogs in one day is unprecedented."

Mrs Downes said Woody was brought to her by the dog warden and was found freezing cold, malnourished and with his hair all matted. She said: "He was just found wandering along a road and was very cold and wet. But he is doing really well now and has had a new lease of life because when he arrived his hair was so matted he was struggling to walk properly.

"He is a really friendly dog. He's about 13-years-old so he's getting on a bit but we'd love to find him a new home because he's adorable."

Mrs Downes runs the kennels with two staff but said she is always looking for volunteer walkers to help out.

She added: "We are always looking for help. People in the new year always want to keep fit and by volunteering with us you can get fit with a regime that is much cheaper than a health club."
