Welshpool Town Council has confirmed the town will host the Welsh Crazy Golf Championships in August, with the Church Street car park set to be the venue.

The town council has been in negotiations with the organisers and said £100 is on offer to the winner.

Robert Robinson, town clerk, said: "The date for this event has been set as Bank Holiday Monday, August 25, and it will take place in the Church Street car park area of the town centre.

Anyone can take part as long as they are eight years of age or more on the day of the competition.

"Competitors will need to book in at 8.30am and the event ends at 6pm.

If it is very wet the number of rounds might be reduced but we will do all we can to try and ensure all runs to plan.

"There will be full PA system and information point so people can be up to date at any time on how competitors are doing, but the event is restricted to 144 entries.

"The top four will receive prizes and there will be two nine-hole courses and each one will need to be completed twice during the day."

The championship was first held in Newport, South Wales in 2010 and has gained a cult following in the last four years.

Mr Robinson had previously said he hoped the event would be a boost to the town's events calendar and to the local economy.

The town council axed the annual Be a Local Tourist Week which encourages people to check out attractions on their own doorstep to enable it to inject new life into the calendar.

Mr Robinson added that other new events will include a pancake race at Maesydre Recreation Ground in February, while the town council will also look to assist with the running of the town carnival.
