Thousands of rail enthusiasts flocked to vantage points along the route to say farewell to the Black Five locomotive, which was on show for the last time over the weekend on the Llangollen Railway near the Shropshire border.

The train has been running on the line since 1993, but has now been sold and will move to new owners in Yorkshire.

George Jones, Llangollen Railway spokesman, said: "Black Five has been with us now for 20 years of service and is a fond favourite.

"I am sure hundreds or thousands of people will have good memories of it. It has now been sold on for another adventure, this time in Yorkshire and we will be sad to see it go, but times move on.

"We held a series of trips along the line and everyone was in really good spirits."

Black Five was built in Derby in 1944 and was preserved in 1968 when steam trains stopped being used by British Rail. It came to Llangollen in 1993 after an agreement was struck with the engine's owner.
