An action group is being set up to canvass the opinions of swimmers about replacing the current Quarry Swimming and Fitness Centre in the town centre.

It follows a meeting on Friday between Shrewsbury and Atcham MP Daniel Kawczynski and Bernard Wills, chairman of Shrewsbury Masters Swimming Club.

Mr Kawczynski has suggested a new facility could be built in town, with the current leisure centre being demolished to make way for a five-star hotel.

Mr Wills said there had been "very positive talks" about the future of the pool.

He added: "We will now meet again next month and will canvass opinion of pool users and the like to see where we go from here."

He said he backed the idea of a new pool as long as it was sited in the town centre.

Last month Mr Kawczynski suggested foreign investment could be secured to replace the pool and leisure centre with a high-end hotel.

Shropshire Council's head of economic development, Mark Pembleton, said at the time that the idea of having the hotel at the site was under consideration.

"We have looked at lots of sites, but the Quarry is interesting as we have the swimming baths there, but they are not really ideal for the 21st century," he said.

"We have other sites where the pool could go, it's not the only site in Shrewsbury."
