Injured rugby player airlifted from Whitchurch

A rugby player had to be airlifted to hospital after suffering neck injuries in Whitchurch.

The air ambulance had to be called to Whitchurch Rugby Club after the young man was injured during a training session.

The player was airlifted to University Hospital in north Staffordshire after the accident, just before noon yesterday.

A paramedic and a rapid response vehicle were also called to the scene.

Bill Williams from Whitchurch, who witnessed the incident, said: "Whilst watching the young men playing rugby, one was injured. He received a lot of attention on the pitch.

"After about half an hour or so, there was the sound of sirens and a paramedic car arrived.

"This was simultaneously joined by the West Midland Air Ambulance."
