New misery for M54 drivers as bridge closed
Commuters were caught up in two-mile queues on the M54 between Shrewsbury and Telford today as a bridge was closed in the latest roadworks scheme.
Motorists faced rush-hour misery in both directions, as bridge repairs at Junction Six coupled with roundabout works at Junction Five caused tailbacks.
Frustrated motorists complained on Twitter about the ongoing disruption.
Steve Vickers tweeted: "Idiots in charge of M54 J6 roadworks. West deck closed but nobody actually working on it."
The westbound bridge which carries the A5223 over the motorway is closed for two days for work on the bridge. It is part of 40 weeks of work to improve bridges between Telford Town Centre and Wellington.
The bridge will reopen on Friday, when the eastbound bridge will close for about five weeks.
Sam Harris, for the Highways Agency, said: "At present it is anticipated the east bridge will be closed for around five weeks. Diversions will be in place and we would advise drivers to check our website for information."
This morning's chaos was aggravated by hold-ups at the Junction Five exit, where the Highways Agency is widening the Forge Roundabout.
