The announcement that the post office is moving inside the Spar store in Corvedale Road has quashed rumours in the town that it was to shut for good.

The Post Office is now inviting customers and other interested parties to give their comments and views on the move from the existing building, also in Corvedale Road, in a six-week public consultation.

Adrian Wales, regional network manager for central England and Wales, said the organisation was aware of the importance of post offices to local communities.

He said: "We are confident that this new modern branch will meet the needs of the local community and secure services for the future.

"The modernisation is part of a major investment programme to convert the post office network to new-style branches and this investment, the largest in the history of the Post Office, makes a commitment to no more branch closure programmes."

Opening hours at the proposed new location would be 7am to 10pm Monday to Saturday and 8am to 9pm on Sunday, an extra 57 hours a week compared to current opening hours.

The existing site is open from 9am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday, and 9am to 12.30pm on Saturday. It is closed on Sunday.

Karen Good, a resident in the town, said she was relieved rumours the post office was closing altogether had proved to be untrue.

She added: "The Craven Arms post office is a gem.

"The staff offer a fantastic service, they are total professionals with a wealth of knowledge and help with the most difficult of queries.

"They really go the extra mile to do a great job.

"I work in Craven Arms and use the post office about once a week, I see many people visiting the shop, it is a centre for the community."

People have until February 19 to make their views known.
