Restaurant plan on the menu for former bank in Oakengates
A new Chinese restaurant would be a "good thing" for Oakengates, town councillors have heard.
The plans would breathe new life into the former bank and offices at number 7, Oxford Street, members heard at their first meeting of the new year.
Applicant Mr Hone Mei wants to build a single storey rear and side extension at the building.
The proposed opening hours are seven days a week, from 11am to midnight.
Members of the town council had no objection to the plans at their meeting, held in the town hall. However concerns were raised about the fire exits and councillors suggested this was looked at further.
Councillor Stephen Reynolds said he believed the restaurant would benefit the area.
"I think a restaurant will be good for Oxford Street," he added.
No members of the public were present at the meeting, but councillors were joined by Colin Kelleher, a prospective candidate who spoke to the council about his wish to join the council as a co-opted member.
The father of one has lived in Oakengates for five years and runs his own company, CMK Electricals. Mr Kelleher said: "I want to make a bit of a difference to my town. I have a 13-year-old son and this will be his town. I want to be part of the community."
Mr Kelleher was approved by the council and took his seat on the council for the remainder of the meeting. Councillors also discussed organising an event to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War.
The working group for this event will be led by Councillor Andy Guy and the event is set to take place in Hartshill Park on June 2.
