Defendant too ill to stand trial in Shropshire care home case

A former Shropshire care home manager will not face trial over the ill treatment of a resident because of the accused's own failing health.

Gillian Bould, 49, was due to stand trial for charges of wilful neglect in December 2011 and fraud by false representation between December 2010 and January 2012.

Bould, from Brick Kiln Way, Donnington, Telford, was manager of Hillcrest Manor care home in Minsterley, near Shrewsbury, from 2010 until January 2012.

But she was given a stay of indictment at Shrewsbury Crown Court yesterday after the court heard that she is now seriously ill.

Judge Robin Onions said: "Mrs Bould was diagnosed with a very serious medical condition by April 2012 which involved an operation. This lady has suffered eight cycles of chemotherapy since diagnosis and has lesions on various parts of her body.

"The consensus appears to be that she is not fit to stand trial and will not be in the foreseeable future."

Bould had denied the charges at an earlier hearing.

The neglect charges related to the care of an 83-year-old care home resident with Alzheimer's who suffered bedsores which were not treated.

The fraud charges related to allegations that Bould lied on her application form when she applied for the position as manager.

Judge Onions added that the charges would be resurrected if Bould becomes fit enough to stand trial.
