Newport Girls High School, Adams' Grammar School, also in Newport, and Thomas Telford, are all in the top 200 selective and non-selective state schools.

Selective schools are grammar schools. They are free but pupils have to take an entrance exam to win a place there.

Newport Girls High is the highest ranked of the three, breaking into the top 20 nationally at 17th. Figures show that all 56 pupils entered for exams gained five or more GCSEs including English and maths at A*-C.

Adams' Grammar School is 66th in the country, with 99 per cent of its 105 pupils achieving top grade passes.

Meanwhile, the flagship Thomas Telford comprehensive school maintained its place in the elite top 200 at 124th, although it lost its place as England's top performing comprehensive school to the Priory Academy LSST in Lincoln.

Moreton Hall School, near Oswestry, maintained its record as one of the top performing schools in the country for pupils achieving the English Baccalaureate.

The school increased its pass rate from 73 per cent in 2012 to 75 per cent last year.
