Telford players plan to stage shows to celebrate a diamond year
Members of an amateur dramatics group are celebrating its diamond anniversary with a selection of performances, beginning with their pantomime.
The Little Theatre in Wellington Road, Donnington was originally an army building, but was turned into a theatre 60 years ago.
To start their milestone year, the performers who use the theatre have been hosting their own performance of Little Tommy Tucker.
Cynthia Shaw, the group's secretary said: "We've really been enjoying the performance, it's lovely.
"Because it is Little Tommy Tucker, it's about a rivalry between two singing teachers so there are some lively songs."
The pantomime started at the weekend and this Saturday marks the final performance.
Tickets are still available for both the matinee performance at 2.30pm and the evening performance at 7.30pm.
Mrs Shaw said: "We do a pantomime every year. So far this year it has gone very well."
Little Tommy Tucker is an English nursery rhyme.
The earliest recorded version of the rhyme is from Tommy Thumb's Pretty Song Book in 1744, which has only four lines. The full version was produced in Mother Goose's Melody around 1765. There are references to various parts of the rhyme in earlier works.
To 'sing for one's supper', was a proverbial phrase by the seventeenth century.
To mark their milestone year, the Donnington group have also revealed they will be hosting two further performances throughout the year.
The group is hoping to do their own version of Alan Ayckbourn's Any One of Us as well as a show to be called Diamond Selection, which they will perform in May and will feature songs from a number of their past performances.
