The men were driving a stolen Vauxhall Corsa, which had been reported missing.

Officers spotted it on a roundabout in Old Park and attempted to stop it, but the men drove off at high speed.

They were followed by the police as they continued the chase along Park Lane in The Rock, Brunel Road in Malinslee and around Malinsgate, close to the town centre.

The car then stopped on Hollyhurst Road, close to a footbridge over the A442, where the two men attempted to run away.

The drama happened at about 3.15pm yesterday, when roads in the area were busy.

Both men are in their 20s. One remained in police custody today, while the other has been released on police bail.

The car had been taken from outside a house in Kensington Way, Oakengates some time between 8.30pm on Wednesday and 7.30pm on Thursday.
