Shropshire train users faced delays after a lorry struck a bridge between Wellington and Telford stations.

The skip lorry attempted to get under the bridge on Bridge Street in Oakengates despite height restrictions at about 12.20pm yesterday.

Michael Swaby, from Ketley, who saw the accident, said: "It was coming down the road, it was going quite slow and as it came past me I heard a loud bang.

"Because it was a skip vehicle, it sort of put the skip on an angle, he stopped very quickly, because he was going so slowly then reversed back.

"Then he went round the corner to stop the traffic building up."

A Network Rail spokesman said the bridge suffered only superficial damage and just after 1pm trains returned to their regular travelling speed over the bridge.
