Speed camera for Telford road where accident claimed schoolboy's life
A speed camera is to be placed on a road in Telford where a nine-year-old boy was killed in a car accident.
Jayden Lee McIvor who was a pupil at Millbrook Primary School, died after he was involved in a collision with a car on a pedestrian crossing on Haybridge Road in Hadley.
Now, after campaigns by residents, the Safer Roads Partnership has agreed to put a speed camera on the road to prevent future accidents.
It was decided at an operations meeting of the Safer Roads Partnership on January 23 that the fixed safety camera will be put next to Hall Garden Flats, on the approach to the pedestrian crossing.
Bosses at the SRP have told residents they will keep them updated about when the camera will be put in place, as no date has yet been set. Charlotte Delo, a mum-of-two, who lives on Haybridge Road has been campaigning for the safety measure to be put in place for the last 12 months.
She said she walks along the road every day with her two daughters and, after Jayden's death, started a campaign to get speeding measures put in place near the crossing following the crisis in February last year.
She said: "I am ecstatic, I'm really happy. It is dangerous. A lot of children use those roads. It's safety, not just for the young but for the elderly.
"It needed to be done."
She added that there are now also plans to revamp the road, by repainting the lines and adding new signage which will help let people know they are approaching a crossing.
Mrs Delo, 26, said she has had a lot of support from Hadley Parish Council, West Mercia Police and local MP Mark Prichard in getting the camera put in place.
Mr Pritchard said: "I am glad the council has finally listened to my representations and those of local residents who I have been campaigning with to improve road safety on Haybridge Road."
A campaign on Facebook to reduce speeding on Haybridge Road has received support from almost 400 local people, including members of Jayden's family.
At the end of last year, Raja Khan, 19, of Hurleybrook Way, in Leegomery, pleaded not guilty to a charge of causing the death of Jayden-Lee McIvor by driving dangerously on Haybridge Road.
