Sport England has teamed up with Shropshire Council and the Co-operative group to award around £1,100 to Market Drayton Sports and Leisure Club, in Betton Road.

The money has been used to set up free coaching classes for young people aged 14 to 20 in a bid to get more youngsters playing squash.

The first session took place last Saturday with 10 youngsters taking part.

Peter Williams, chairman of Market Drayton Squash Club, said the first session went very well and said it is not too late for anyone wishing to join.

He said: "Squash hit its peak in the 1980s but the sport then went through a bit of a lull and we are doing what we can to attract new, younger players.

"We have been given a lot of money from Sport England, Shropshire Council and the Co-operative group with it all together totalling more than £1,100.

"What we have decided to do is run an eight week course every Saturday where people can get expert coaching. "By introducing them to the game hopefully they will go on to become regular players and then the club will go on to have a thriving youth section. That's the aim."

Mr Williams said the first session held last Saturday went very well.

He said: "We have two coaches Chris Whilde and Nick Billington who are absolutely brilliant.

"I was a bit worried nobody would turn up but we had nine young men and one young lady so I was really pleased.

"The one girl took on the boys and did really well. And they all seemed to enjoy themselves."

Mr Williams said despite the course starting youngsters are still welcome to join.

He added: "The course is completely free.

"We used the money we were given to buy rackets, balls and eye protectors so nobody has to worry about bringing along any equipment.

"It's a great game, it's popularity is now rising and you could see the ten youngsters who came along to the session on Saturday had a great time."
