Telford car arson attacks prompt action call
A spate of car fires in one small area of Telford has prompted calls for action to prevent further trouble.
The two Telford & Wrekin councillors for the Malinslee ward have now asked for a round-table summit with police chiefs to discuss what can be done to prevent more fires.
Four cars have been set alight over the past seven days in Matlock Avenue, George Chetwood Court, Spout Way and Dark Lane Drive – three within 90 minutes of each other in the early hours of Saturday. The fourth, in the early hours of yesterday, also damaged guttering on a nearby garage. All four are being treated as suspicious.
Councillors Shaun Davies and Kuldip Sahota, who represent Malinslee on the borough council, have called for action to investigate the offences, to provide assurance and advice to the community and to put measures in place to prevent further fires. They have written to West Mercia Police and to the police and crime commissioner about the fires.
Councillor Sahota said: "This spate of fires is very, very concerning. We need action to find out what is taking place and to address the real risk and also the concerns of the community.
"Residents have contacted me who are very concerned – we need the police and fire service to take immediate action.
"I have already asked the council to review the situation to and offer what support it can."
Councillor Davies added: "Malinslee and Dawley is a safe place to live and visit.
"These latest incidents are shocking and we will be calling a round table meeting with key partners to ensure there is action plan to reassure our community, and get to the bottom of the incidents. Kuldip and I will be working with the authorities."
