North Shropshire councillor unveils caravan site proposal
A Shropshire councillor has unveiled plans to create a caravan site at his home.
Councillor Paul Wynn wants to create the site at Hadley Farm, near Whitchurch.
Councillor Wynn, who represents Prees, has submitted a planning application to Shropshire Council. It features a site for 10 touring caravans and eight seasonal caravans on agricultural land.
The former dairy farmer, who also runs the Alfresco Kitchen outdoor cafe and Hadley Cross Country, hopes to add the caravan site to his portfolio of businesses.
"We've diversified several times before and we are looking to do it again by making another business," he said.
Documents in support of the application say Councillor Wynn's existing businesses will complement the new venture.
"It is felt that this is an appropriate and sustainable development that will only benefit the area," they say.
"The proposal will have minimal impact upon the landscape of the area, but will greatly contribute to the local economy.
"It is felt that the proposed site is well suited to the provision of holiday accommodation, particularly as it will be immediately adjacent the Llangollen Canal and is a short walk from the centre of Whitchurch.
"Originally a dairy enterprise, Hadley Farm is now diversifying into a suckler beef system alongside an outdoor kitchen/cafe, equestrian cross country course and ménage."
Councillor Rob Hewson, mayor of Whit-church, said: "I personally think it is a very good idea. It is at the end of town which will hopefully attract people in.
"We have only got one caravan site – at Mile Bank – which is an excellent site."
People can comment on the plans as part of the consultation over the development, via the Shropshire Council website.
