A fault in an underground cable caused a power cut which hit almost 3,000 Shropshire homes.

Power was restored to all but six of the properties in south Telford which were hit by the blackout at about 4pm. Western Power Distribution used a generator to restore electricity to those final homes while the fault, in an 11,000 underground cable, was repaired.

The company confirmed that 2,907 properties in the Lightmoor and Madeley areas lost power just before 4pm.

Almost all were reconnected by 6.30pm.

John Weston, of Western Power, said: "It can take time to find the exact location of the fault and repair it, which is why generators are brought in."
