Court told driver caused Telford boy's death
A teenage driver caused the death of a nine-year-old boy who was knocked down at a crossing, a court heard.
Raja Khan, 19, denies causing the death of Jayden-Lee McIvor by dangerous driving at a pelican crossing in Telford.
Jayden-Lee, of Hurleybrook Way, Leegomery, died after a collision with Khan's car on Haybridge Road, Hadley on February 2 last year. Khan, also of Hurleybrook Way, pleaded guilty to death by careless driving, but denies he was driving dangerously.
Hugh O'Brien-Quinn, prosecuting at Shrewsbury Crown Court, said: "Jayden was killed as he crossed the road. Jayden had done nothing wrong – his death was entirely the fault of the defendant, Raja Khan."
He said just after 3pm the nine-year-old had gone to buy groceries. He pressed the button at a pelican crossing and waited.
A silver Citroën stopped but was then hit from behind by Khan's red Ford Focus, which then careered off and hit Jayden-Lee. The trial continues.
Despite having a clear 140 metre view of pelican crossing lights, Khan did not notice they had changed, or even that Mr Shaw's car had stopped, Mr O'Brien-Quinn said.
