Mystery of badge from the dawn of Shropshire football

An old framed Shropshire Football Association badge, seemingly dating from the dawn of organised football in the county, is puzzling Chris Meeson, who bought it online – and now he is hoping a Shropshire Star reader could come up with some information about it and its history.

The badge is a mystery

Chris, who lives near Munslow, has sent us a picture of his purchase, which features the classic Shropshire heraldic design of three leopards' faces, each one with individual features, suggesting that the badge was handmade.

"On the back of the frame written in pencil it states Shropshire Football Association and there's a date that looks like 1880, but it could be 1886 or even 1888. It's obviously a cloth badge from a shirt, or possibly a blazer," he said.

He bought it on eBay but the seller knew nothing specific about it. He said:

"I hope we can come up with something of its history."
