When he should have been building up the miles on his feet in readiness for his charity marathon challenge, Mr Sobzak was dispatched to Aberystwyth to help run the emergency control room helping to reconnect the thousands of people that were left without power by storms which have battered Britain in recent weeks.

He spent a week working up to 18 hours a day ensuring that Scottish Power linesmen were directed to the hundreds of cables that came down in the winds and rain.

Now back home in Ellesmere he is having to catch up on his missed training and took part in a 10-mile race in Rhyl, North Wales, yesterday.

He will run the 26.2 miles around London on April 13 to raise funds for the Bone Cancer Unit at Oswestry Orthopaedic Hospital and has pledged to raise more than £1,000.

At the moment he has had £665 donated to his Just Giving site, which can be found at www.justgiving.com/1300milestoLondon.

He said: "The storms certainly set back the training as there was no time at all to do anything but work, eat and sleep. However I can not praise enough the people of Aberystwyth for their kindness and their appreciation for the work we were doing."
