Shrewsbury lacemaking group is to stage display in gallery
A lacemaking group which has been running for more than 30 years will be holding a major exhibition at a gallery in Shropshire next month.
Shrewsbury Lacemakers, which was formed in 1981, is busy preparing for its show Leap into Spring, which will be staged at the town's Bear Steps Gallery.
Publicity officer, Thelma Foster, said: "Visitors can find out more about different types of handmade lace, and the theme of spring will be a key part of the exhibition, demonstrating modern interpretations of this ancient craft.
"Our members have been busy making everything connected to spring under the general topics of insects and butterflies, foliage and flowers, small mammals such as rabbits, mice, hedgehogs, frogs and snakes, new life including eggs, baby chicks and lambs and dress such as collars, handkerchiefs, hats with trimmings.
"People will be able to see live demonstrations of the various types of lacemaking and to try out the main steps in bobbin lace making. New members are always welcome to join and we hold monthly meetings at Bayston Hill memorial hall where they can learn new skills.
"We have a comprehensive library of books, videos and DVDs and patterns for people to learn the basics of this craft."
"I would really like to encourage people of all ages to take a look at making lace items. The Bear Steps exhibition will inform people how to join a group, how to find out about the importance of lace in historical times, and how to use lacemaking in art."
The exhibition will run from March 10 to 21 from 10am to 4pm Monday to Saturday.
