They are far too young to remember the iconic TV show and film, but young people in Telford say they cannot get enough of the musical Fame.

When asked what production they would like to put on, the pupils at Madeley Academy voted for the 1980s musical, famous for its upbeat songs and leg warmers.

Lorna Parkhouse, head of performing arts at the school, said: "There are so many parallels between this show and our performing arts students, particularly the sixth formers who are currently auditioning at Performing Arts Colleges, that it seemed an obvious choice in the end.

"There are multiple lead roles in Fame, and this year we have so much talent here, that I wanted as many of them as possible to have their moment in the spotlight. It also beautifully showcases our multiple disciplines of music, dance and drama and has given some of our talented dancers in particular a chance to shine.

"If you have walked into our dance studios during ballet rehearsals you would know that it feels like you could be in any professional ballet company anywhere, rather than a school environment. "

"The professionalism and quality of work has been an experience to behold and has been a reminder of quite how far we have progressed over the last few years in Performing Arts at Madeley Academy."

Mrs Parkhouse said that the school has also had some financial support to enable it to hire professional scenery, and support from the site managers to get the orchestral pit ready for the show, which opens for its three-day run at the academy tonight.
