The council's mobile kitchen is touring schools in the borough and pupils are being challenged to create tasty recipes using only Fairtrade products.

On Monday the bus rolled into Newport Girls' High School. Assistant head Victoria Maxwell said: "Everyone in the school had a go at creating a recipe using Fairtrade goods.

"They came up with some imaginative ideas including morning breakfast bars and spicy soups. Eight of our girls took part in the cooking when the bus arrived. They had a very good morning and enjoyed working together."

The council plans to produce a cook book with some of the best recipes.

Newport Girls' High Year 12 pupil Claudia Mooney won the award for the best recipe with her carrot and parsnip soup.

The school has been supporting Fairtrade for a number of years and Miss Maxwell added: "We have some pupils who are ambassadors for Fairtrade who go into primary schools.

"We also have a Fairtrade group which meets regularly. We are very passionate about it."

Fairtrade Fortnight began last Mondayand continues through to Sunday.

A petition to make the banana trade fair is being backed by Telford & Wrekin Council.

Councillor Shaun Davies, cabinet member for neighbourhood services, employment and skills, said: "Fairtrade Fortnight is an opportunity to find out more about what we are purchasing and how it is made, and make more informed choices about the things we are buying."

Telford and Wrekin Fairtrade Alliance also has a number of Fairtrade-related events including a drink and cookie promotion at the Ironbridge Gorge Museums and a promotional stand and discounts at Meeting Point House.
