Girls High School pupils in Newport have collected nearly 300 tooth brushes to send over to Africa. Sammi Smith, Abigail Daragos, Caitlin Morrison, Lucy Watson, Megan Briggs, Jessica Addo, Katelyn Randle and Navashi Nanda.

Youngsters at Newport Girls' High School have collected more than 300 toothbrushes which will be shipped out. For many of the recipients it will be the first toothbrush they have ever owned.

Each house at Newport Girls' High School selects a charity to support each year. The school's Seacole House decided on Mercy Ships.

Seventeen-year-old Lucy Watson, who has led the collection, said: "Pupils have been bringing in toothbrushes from December until now. They will go off to West Africa with Mercy Ships, who will distribute them to children in need. It's been great to be involved in and I hope we have made a real difference. Toothbrushes are something that can easily be taken for granted."

The toothbrushes will be making their 3,500 mile journey at the end of the week.

Mercy Ships, founded in 1978, uses hospital ships and mobile dental clinics to give health care to some of the world's poorest people in the world.
