Anthony Watson, 29, was said to have been "fighting drunk" at the time of the incident which took place in Newport in September last year.

He punched and kicked Michael Armour who suffered concussion and was in hospital for two days.

There was concern for Mr Armour because he had suffered a previous brain injury, Shrewsbury Crown Court heard yesterday.

Watson, of St Matthews Road, Donnington, was jailed for a total of 17 months after admitting offences of causing actual bodily harm and common assault. Recorder Peter Cooke said that Mr Armour and his girlfriend, Louis Clear, had seen Watson urinating against a church wall and were not impressed and were entitled to remonstrate with the defendant about his disgusting behaviour.

He said that Watson had kicked Mr Armour while he was on the ground and refused to show him any mercy when his girlfriend intervened and mentioned the previous head injury.

Recorder Cooke said Watson had been involved in the sort of mindless, drunken violence that makes town centres unpleasant places to be at night.
