The six inch by four inch plaques were placed on the wall at the cemetery in Linden Avenue as a memorial to ashes that are buried in the ground.

Many of them have been in place since the 1970s and 80s and each contains personalised messages from bereaved relatives to their deceased loved ones.

Telford & Wrekin Council's Register Office was made aware of the theft today by a passing resident.

Further investigations revealed that the theft had been large scale. Telford & Wrekin Council has reported the theft to West Mercia Police.

Andrew Meredith, Telford & Wrekin Council's customer services manager, said: "Firstly we would ask anyone who is aware of the location of any of these plaques to get in touch as clearly this is a very emotional loss for a lot of people."

Anyone with information should contact West Mercia Police on 0300 333 3000. Relatives concerned that their loved one's plaque may have been stolen should contact 01952 382444 from 9am on Monday.
