The 24-year-old victim was walking home after a night out in Madeley when he was set upon from behind and repeatedly punched to the face and head.

He needed hospital treatment after suffering a suspected broken nose, black eye and swollen jaw during the attack in Bridgnorth Road some time between 3am and 3.30am on Sunday.

Police are now appealing for witnesses to the assault, and are particularly keen to speak to the person who is believed to have pulled the attacker off the victim, who had to be taken to hospital for treatment for the injuries to his face.

Chris Ammonds, spokesman for West Mercia Police, said: "

We are very keen to hear from anyone who may have seen the assault and anyone who tried to break it up."
