Soldier remanded in court over Shropshire barracks murder
A Shropshire-based soldier has been remanded in custody charged with the murder of a corporal at Clive Barracks in Tern Hill.
Lance Corporal Richard Farrell, 23, was charged with the murder of Corporal Geoffrey McNeill,32, when he appeared at Telford Magistrates Court today.
Corporal McNeill, from Ballymoney, County Antrim was found dead in his accommodation at 9am on Saturday and it is understood Farrell was arrested at 10.48am.
He was held in custody at Shrewsbury Police station for questioning and officers gained extra time to interview him before he was charged with murder at 12.50am today.
Appearing in the dock wearing a navy blue jumper he looked tired, with dark stubble and dark hair.
He spoke only to confirm his name and address at Tern Hill barracks.
Farrell was remanded in custody pending a hearing at Wolverhampton Crown Court on Friday.
Corporal McNeill was a member of the 1st Battalion Royal Irish Regiment.
Police had until later today to charge or release Farrell.
