Clun Bridge to shut for repairs
An ancient bridge dating back to 1450 will close for up to three weeks to allow emergency repairs to be carried out following a car crash.
Clun Bridge will be closed to cars and lorries on March 24 and a 10-metre section of the parapet wall will be taken down and rebuilt. It comes after it was damaged by a vehicle on Tuesday (MAR 11).
The bridge, which carries the A488 over the River Clun in the town, has regularly been hit by heavy goods vehicles. Three years ago bollards and a wider approach were set up to prevent accidents.
Diversions will be set up along the B4385 and A4113 between Bishop's Castle and Knighton via Little Brampton, Purslow and Leintwardine while the work is carried out. Cars will also be able to follow a route through Whitcott Keysett, but officials at Shropshire Council said it would not be suitable for lorries or other large vehicles.
Pedestrians and dismounted cyclists will still be able to use the bridge.
Claire Wild, Shropshire Council's cabinet member responsible for bridge maintenance, said: "This is essential, safety related work which needs to be carried out at short notice to repair accident damage.
"It is appreciated that the bridge closure will cause some inconvenience and everyone involved in the repair will do all that they can to re-open the bridge as soon as possible. Weather permitting, the contractor will be working on the repair seven days a week."
