Plans to knock down electricity substation in Oswestry

Energy giant Scottish Power is planning to demolish its electrical substation base in a town in Shropshire, including a 19th century building, and replace it with a new building as part of a major modernisation programme.

The firm wants to knock down the Coney Green premises in Oswestry and construct a new 33kV switchroom, 11kV substation and transformer.

Plans have been lodged with Shropshire Council and the firm has prepared a design and access statement outlining the proposal.

The site is within Oswestry's conservation area, the statement says, so special consent will have to be given for the work and it adds the project is part of a wider £14 million modernisation and grid reinforcement programme.

The statement says the site includes a disused two-storey building, believed to date from the 19th century.

It says that building has remained disused for many years and is in poor condition.

Shropshire Council is hoping to make a decision on the application by May 1.
