Although a formal identification is yet to take place, Mr Bartlett's family have been informed of the developments and the Shropshire coroner, Mr John Ellery, has also been notified.

The body was seen by a member of the public in the river, opposite the Pengwern Boat Club, at just after 1pm. It was recovered from the water by specialist police crews at just before 2pm.

Forensic investigation officers also attended the scene along with members of the fire and rescue service.

Richard Ewels, spokesman for West Mercia Police, said: "A body was recovered at just before 2pm from the River Severn in the area of Shrewsbury Quarry. It is believed to be that of a man but is yet to be identified.

"However, the family of Robert Bartlett, a man reported missing in February, has been informed as has the Shropshire coroner."

Mr Bartlett was last seen at a relative's house in Middletown on February 17 before he drove to Shrewsbury. His car was found in the Victoria Quay area.
