Craven Arms and Church Stretton Councillor David Evans had to have surgery for a detached retina which saved the sight in his left eye.
Now recovered, he returned to Specsavers in Ludlow to thank optometrist Nicola Aubrey who carried out the original eye examination.
Mr Evans, 60, of Craven Arms, made an appointment after experiencing flashers and floaters in his vision and Ms Aubrey was concerned that the retina in his left eye had become detached.
She immediately referred him to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital where the consultant confirmed the diagnosis.
Ms Aubrey said: "I'm just pleased we were able to help with the diagnosis."
