James O'Keefe, 38, had three previous offences of drink-driving when he appeared at Telford Magistrates Court yesterday.

Kate Price, prosecuting, said: "At 3am on Sunday, March 9, officers saw the defendant in a black Honda Civic driving frantically on West Centre Way, Lawley."

She said officers decided to pull the car over.

"He said he had been drinking," Mrs Price told the court.

O'Keefe of Westmorland Mews, Leegomery, blew a roadside reading of 73 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath at the roadside, which rose to 80 microgrammes in custody – more than twice the legal limit of 35 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath.

Mrs Price told the court he had three previous convictions for drink driving.

Representing himself, O'Keefe said: "I have no excuse, no reason. I'm guilty, I did it."

He was banned from driving for 40 months and ordered to pay a fine of £320, a £32 victim surcharge and £85 costs.
