Inquest opens on soldier killed at Shropshire barracks

The inquest on a soldier killed at a Shropshire barracks has been opened and adjourned.

Mr John Ellery, coroner for Shropshire and Telford and Wrekin, heard that Corporal Geoffrey McNeill, 32, was confirmed dead at Clive Barracks in Tern Hill, Market Drayton at 9.32am on March 8.

Sergeant Alan Crossley from West Mercia Police told the inquest that Lance Corporal Richard Farrell, 23, has been charged with Corporal McNeill's murder.

He said: ""A post mortem was carried out by Dr Kola and a second post mortem is to be carried out on behalf of the defence team."

The case was adjourned until a date to be set following the outcome of the criminal process.

* Lance Corporal Richard Farrell was due to appear at Stafford Crown Court today.
