Members of the Blue and Amber Fanzine are aiming to raise £488 for Dementia UK after learning the club legend was suffering from the condition. The figure represents £1 for every professional game Alf played.

As of last night the total stood at £247.50, including gift aid.

Those donating left heartfelt comments in tribute to Alf's time with Shrewsbury Town.

Jonathan Griffiths said: "Alf in his prime was amazing. Those marauding runs from the back through midfield will never be forgotten. And all those goals."

Phill Partridge said: "Oh how I wish we had a forward of Alf's ability in the present Shrewsbury team. Great goal scorer who gave me hours of pleasure watching him. All the best Alf, thinking of you and your family."

It was revealed by Alf's wife Jean this week that the 68-year-old grandfather has moved into a care home, can now barely speak and has no recollection of his playing career. The striker is the fourth all-time highest league scorer for the club, with 64 goals.
