The route for the 2014 cycle race has been announced, with stage three on September 9 starting in Newtown in Powys.

It is the first time the race has visited Newtown since 2010, when the town hosted the stage which finished in Swansea.

But Shropshire, which also hosted part of the race last year, will miss out this time around.

Wales' First Minister Carwyn Jones said the race gave the country a chance to showcase itself to the world.

He said: "The Tour of Britain is an opportunity for us to showcase Wales' unique and beautiful landscape to the world, as well as highlighting our ability to host a variety of major events.

"Last year's huge Welsh crowds created a fantastic atmosphere and I hope that people from across Wales come out to support the event again this year."

Last year thousands of cycling fans lined the streets to see Tour de France and Olympic gold medal winner Sir Bradley Wiggins riding through Market Drayton and Whitchurch before crossing the border towards Wrexham and finishing in Llanberis.

British Cycling's Cyclesport director, Jonny Clay, said: "The Tour of Britain gives cycling fans the opportunity to see the best teams and riders in the world competing on their doorstep. Watching the race from the roadside is free."
