Shropshire couple score with a match made at Molineux
A Shropshire couple who are mad-keen Wolves fans are preparing for their own big match after a proposal on the pitch at Molineux during Saturday's game against Peterborough – in front of 23,000 people.
Les Roberts, 42, asked Julie Shinton, 46, to marry him at half-time during the game, which Wolves won 2-0.
A tearful Julie said "yes" and the happy couple, who live in Wellington, are preparing for their wedding abroad in September.
"We met at Molineux on the South Bank two years ago so it seemed appropriate that I asked Julie to marry me here," said Les, who is manager of fruit and vegetable company Rowlands in Shrewsbury. "I had my speech all made up but it took Julie by surprise – she was crying her eyes out!
"I said 'the South Bank is where we started out and our love knows no division – the Wolves motto.
"And Molineux is where I'm going to go down on one knee because that's where we met, so will you marry me?
"To hear her say yes was lovely and it was great that all the family were there to see it.
"I think she thought I was going to propose to her when we go to Majorca on holiday soon in front of 25 friends and family. But to do it in front of over 23,000 people at Molineux was better!"
Julie, who is a delivery officer for Royal Mail in Wednesfield, said: "I'm on top of the world – I'm the happiest woman alive!
"I knew he was planning to ask me to marry him because he said to me 'We need to pick an engagement ring up next week'.
"I thought it would happen in Majorca, so I never thought he'd do it at Molineux because no one gets engaged there!"
Les lured Julie onto the pitch by telling her she'd won a pizza in a competition after the winning ticket was left on her seat.
"I collected the pizza – I don't even like pizza – but the proposal didn't enter my head," said Julie.
"Then I saw him grab the mike and I couldn't believe it. But of course I said 'yes' – he's a bloke who ticks all the boxes."
