The Bridge Inn in Newport, which is under new management, has hired a chef and launched a new menu.

And for those customers who feel more than a bit peckish, there is a new challenge burger made up of four six ounce beef patties, 10 pieces of bacon, four flat mushrooms, five pieces of bread and blue cheese - accompanied by large chips, large onions and large coleslaw.

At a whopping 4,000 calories, it contains almost twice the recommended daily calories for a man.

Those who manage to eat the challenge burger within an hour will see their name added to a "wall of fame", while those who try but fail will find themselves on the "wall of shame".

Among the latest food failures are Eddie Keenan and Marc Gamble, both of whom found their eyes were bigger than their bellies.

Chef Michael Matthews is the man behind the huge burger.

He said: "I am as thin as a rake so I wouldn't have a chance. I made one the other day and four of us tried one between us and we couldn't finish it. But a few of the local lads reckon they could finish it easily.

"One guy said that he had taken on a 40oz steak with 1kg of chips and he had done it.

"We will soon find out whether they are all bluff and bluster."

Big eating challenges have become increasingly popular, helped on by the American TV show Man vs Food, which sees food enthusiast Adam Richman trying to consume enormous meals at restaurants.
