More than 180 people packed into Morda Village Hall to watch him in action on Saturday night.

Davis was guest of honour at a presentation evening for the Oswestry and District Snooker and Billiards League.

He played eight games during the evening, seven singles matches and one double, when he teamed up with Paul Davies from Glyn Ceiriog, winner of the league's billiards competition.

All those who faced the six times world champion snooker player were winners of league competitions.

The only opponent to win against him was Mike Dubycki from Ellesmere, who was the overall competition winner in the league last season.

Dennis Hughes, league secretary, said Davis had been thoroughly entertaining and was a huge hit with the audience.

"He certainly isn't the 'boring' person that everyone thought he was in the 1970s.

"He entertained everyone talking about his life and cracking jokes – even when he was making shots."

"The players and the spectators thoroughly enjoyed themselves. It was a great night," Mr Hughes said.

"He was happy to chat to people, sign photographs and have his picture taken."

The league has 20 teams in two divisions.

Mr Hughes said the league's presentation evening was always a big night.

"We started having big names at our presentation evenings about eight or nine years ago.

"Steve was with us about five years ago and we have also had others including Dennis Taylor, John Parrott and Jimmy White. It's very popular with our members."

Davis is one of snooker's most successful players, dominating the game in the 1980s and 90s. He continues to play some competitive matches but spends most of his time working as a commentator.

The 56-year-old player is also part of a country-wide education programme in which he visits schools, promoting the game and its links with mathematics.
